Regals Pick Up 4 Aces for ALS in Loss to UC Santa Cruz

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran Women's Volleyball came away from tonight's match against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz with a 1-3 loss, but collected 4 aces for the first annual Aces for ALS weekend.

Anyone can sponsor a player, or the team, by donating any amount of money, for every score by a service ace during these two games. All amounts are appreciated. In memory of senior Lauren Heller's father, Kevin, all donations will support the mission of the Golden West Chapter of The ALS Association. This means, that for every ace scored by the Regals, donations will be made.

The first set saw both teams come out trying to play a controlled and patient game in this their second meeting of the season. With UC Santa Cruz up 6-3 Lauren Heller hit a rocket down the line to change the momentum of the set. Julia Trento would then lead a serving run of 8 straight points, including the first ace of the weekend, to put the Regals up 12-6. With a firm lead in hand, the Regals held strong and took the set 25-23 on a kill from Sophia Muller.

In set 2, the Banana Slugs were able to create some runs of their own jumping out to a 4-1 and 14-6 lead. The Regals fought back to 19-22, but the deficit proved to be too much with UC Santa Cruz winning 25-19.

With the match tied 1-1 the Banana Slugs again used their strong serve to create space early in set 3. Down 7-15 in the set, the Regals were able to apply some pressure with small runs that saw Jenna Jones and Kennedy Crane each serve aces for the cause. Cal Lutheran closed the gap to 15-19, but the Banana Slugs finished it out from there, winning the set 25-15 for a 2-1 advantage in the match.

In the 4th set, UC Santa Cruz was again able to create an early lead at 10-4. Maci Haddad was able to generate the 4th ace of the night for the Regals, but the Banana Slugs carried their momentum to a 25-17 score and a 3-1 match win.

The Regal offense was led by senior middle Maci Haddad with 10 kills and 13 total points. Outside hitters Sophia Muller had 6 kills and Lauren Heller added 5 kills.

Isabella Wade led the defense with 20 digs while working behind the the Regal front row that picked up 13 total block assists.


The Regals will be back in Gilbert Arena for the second match of the Aces for ALS weekend Saturday night at 6pm against Caltech.
