THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University honored its 2022 senior student-athletes at the Scholar-Athlete Society banquet on Monday night. Cal Lutheran has 102 senior student-athletes and 58 were scholar-athletes.

Those in attendance got to hear from Cal Lutheran President Lori Varlotta, Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Success Matt Ward, Director of Athletics Holly Roepke, Co-Faculty Athletic Representative Bruce Gillies and Vice President for Mission & Identity Pastor Melissa Maxwell-Doherty.

The Cal Lutheran Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as chosen by a Faculty Athletic Mentor Policies Committee, were Sonia Chan of women's soccer and Winston Hewes of men's swimming and diving.

In 2003, Elaine Benditson inspired the concept and the Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society was created to acknowledge the academic achievements of CLU athletes.

Cal Lutheran believes it is important to give special emphasis to students who are competing rigorously to achieve excellence in the classroom and in their chosen sport. The Kingsmen and Regals honored during the ceremony have each proven to bring equal dedication and discipline to both the classroom and chosen fields of play.

The inaugural class had 36 inductees and continues to grow each year. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average to be inducted to the Scholar-Athlete Society.

This year's graduating class accomplished 19 SCIAC Tournament Appearances, 27 seniors were named All-SCIAC at least once in their career, three SCIAC Character Award winners, four SCIAC Athletes of the Year and multiple athletes how won twice, two SCIAC Championships and three SCIAC individual champions, multiple individuals won multiple titles, three All-West Region honorees, four All-America honors, one individual NCAA Champion and many academic awards.
