Strong Blocking Not Enough for Regals Against Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, California — The California Lutheran volleyball team came away from tonight's SCIAC match against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer with a 0-3 loss despite a strong blocking presence at the net.

The Regals took control of Set 1 and looked to close it out ahead 24-20. The Sagehens then reeled off 6 straight points to take the set 26-24.

Set 2 saw the Regals stay with the Sagehens with an early 11-11 score. From there, the Regals were again victims of long strings of points, giving up 4, 3, and 6 point runs to put the Sagehens up 24-14. Maci Haddad teamed up with Jenna Jones and Kennedy Crane for a pair of blocks but the deficit was too much to overcome as Pomona-Pitzer found the floor for a 25-16 win.

Cal Lutheran began Set 3 with a 6 point run of their own behind the serve of Kennedy Crane. They carried this momentum to a 17-12 lead, looking to extend the match. Once again, six unanswered points put the Sagehens up 18-17. That was the final lead change of the match as Pomona-Pitzer would finish off the final set 25-21 for a 3-0 sweep.

Kennedy Crane led the Regals with 7 kills, followed by Sophia Muller with 5. Maci Haddad, Morgan Given, and Miranda Chan all added 4 kills as well.

Julia Trento and Kennedy Crane picked up 13 digs each while Jenna Jones had 11 and Isabella Wade had 10.

Along with spreading out the digs, the Regals had 9 blocks that were all assisted. Unfortunately, the strong blocking performance was not able to outweigh the difference between the Sagehen's 41 team kills when compared to the Regals' 28.

The Regals will be returning to Gilbert Arena on Saturday night to face off with the Poets of Whittier College at 7pm.
