Regals Come Out Strong, Push #2 CMS

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. —California Lutheran's women's volleyball team took on the #2 team in the nation, the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The conference opponents knew each other well and battled hard, but the Athenas were able to come away with the 3-0 win and remain undefeated on the season.

The teams battled back and forth with ties at 10-10 and 17-17 before a string of kills put CMS ahead 21-17. A big block by Maci Haddad and Sophia Muller, the team's 5th of the set, gave the Regals a quick boost, but was not enough as the Athenas took set 1 25-21.

Set 2 was another series of traded points with the difference coming in the form of a 4 point run for the Athenas that saw them take a 12-8 lead that they would never relinquish. CMS would go on to win the second set by a score of 25-19.

In the third set, the Athenas jumped out to an early 13-3 lead. Blocks from Maci Haddad, Morgan Given, and Kira Mortenson, along with a 3 point service run by Julia Trento were good signs for the Regals, but not enough to stop the momentum as CMS would take the set 25-11 and the match 3-0.

The Regals were led by Morgan Given, Sophia Muller, and Maci Haddad who all came away with 7 kills. Haddad also had 2.5 blocks to lead the defense at the net, while Isabella Wade had 19 digs in the back row.

Cal Lutheran will be on the road on Saturday to take on Chapman at 4:00pm. A win would not only avenge a 5 set loss from earlier in the season, but would move the Regals up to a tie with Chapman for third in the SCIAC standings.
