ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Izzy De Souza, Zaria Opara and Lexi Rond were selected as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.
Rond was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the third time her career while De Souza and Opara earned their second. It is the second straight week Opara was honored for track and field. De Souza and Rond swept the water polo awards.
De Souza (Irvine, Calif.) was selected as the Women's Water Polo Defensive Athlete of the Week. The sophomore led No. 3 Cal Lutheran to a 4-0 week that featured three SCIAC wins. The Regals defeated La Verne (11-5), Chapman (14-8), VMI (9-5), and Occidental (14-3). De Souza turned away 47 shots during the stretch including 13 against the Leopards, 18 versus the Panthers, nine against the Keydets, and seven in the win over the Tigers. She also notched four assists and two steals during the week.
Opara (Carnation, Wash.)) was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Week. The paced California Lutheran in the field events at the Occidental Distance Carnival. Opara secured fourth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.88 meters, finished 10th in the shot put throw with a heave of 10.34 meters, and finished 15th overall in the discus throw with a hurl of 33.32 meters.
Rond (Ventura, Calif.) earned the Women's Water Polo Offensive Athlete of the Week. The senior helped No. 3 Cal Lutheran to a 4-0 week that featured three SCIAC wins. The Regals defeated La Verne (11-5), Chapman (14-8), VMI (9-5), and Occidental (14-3). Rond notched 18 goals, 14 drawn ejections, four steals, and an assist during the span. She scored four times against the Leopards, five times against the Panthers, four times versus the Keydets, and five times against the Tigers.
