Halvaks Named Interim Head Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — After being an assistant coach for California Lutheran University men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track & field for seven years, Brett Halvaks was named interim head coach of all four programs.

Halvaks has been an integral part of Matt Lea's coaching staff and looks to continue the success for the Kingsmen and Regals. An alumnus of Kingsmen track & field and cross country, Halvaks is now the head coach of the programs he loved so much.

Mostly working with the distance runners, Halvaks' resume speaks for itself as he has helped the Purple and Gold to new heights in Division III.

During his time at Cal Lutheran, student athletes have set 34 top-10 program marks, he has personally coached one national champion (Melissa Skiba, 2015, 5,000 meter run), two school records (3,000 meter run & 5,000 meter run), one national qualifier in cross country (Timmy Kahovec, 2017) and one U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honor (Veronica Redpath, 2019).

"I am very excited to take over the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs," said Halvaks. "As an alum and an assistant coach, I look forward to continuing to build on the success of these great programs.

"I would like to thank Dan Kuntz and Holly Roepke for this opportunity. Their trust, and the experiences I have gained working under Matt Lea, have given me the foundation to lead these programs. This has been a dream of mine, and I am so grateful to continue my career here at Cal Lutheran."
