Three Kingsmen Selected SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Jacob AlonzoStephen Blaauw, and Mason Johnson earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.

Alonzo garnered the Men's Basketball Defensive Athlete of the Week, Blaauw was named the Men's Water Polo Defensive Athlete of the Week and Johnson earned Men's Basketball Offensive Athlete of the Week. All three earned the honor for the first time. 

Alonzo (Camarillo, Calif.) helped Cal Lutheran men's basketball to a 3-0 week as the Kingsmen traveled to Illinois and defeated North Central (Ill.) (80-79), Illinois Tech (74-61) and North Park (79-75, overtime). Cal Lutheran is off to its best start since 2016-17, in which the Kingsmen started 7-0. The senior guard tallied 4.3 steals per game, and had seven in the overtime win against North Park. He recorded 4.0 defensive rebounds per game, including five-plus in two of the three contests. For the week, he averaged 19.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.3 steals. 

Blaauw (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) led Cal Lutheran men's water polo to a 2-0 week as the Kingsmen defeated Caltech (22-12) and La Verne (22-7). Being a defensive prowess for the Purple and Gold, the senior was all over the pool. He recorded four steals and added two goals against Caltech. He then recorded three steals, two goals, and one assist, drawn ejection and field block versus La Verne. Blaauw leads the nation in field blocks with 24. 

Johnson (Oxnard, Calif.) came out on fire to start the season averaging 25.3 points per game, leading the Kingsmen to three wins in Illinois.  He scored 20-plus in every game, with a field-goal percentage of 47.3. He showed an all-around performance with 7.0 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists and 3.7 steals. Against North Central, and down by one, the senior guard was fouled with just five seconds left in the game. He made both free throws as the Kingsmen held on and opened the season with a win. In overtime against North Park, he made all four of his free throws as the Kingsmen took down North Park.
