Regals Test Athenas in Semifinals

CLAREMONT, Calif. — No. 3 Cal Lutheran women's water polo was up to the challenge as they headed to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament on Friday night. The Regals tested the Athenas, but were defeated 9-6. 

The Regals season comes to an end with an overall record of 12-15. They made the SCIAC Tournament for the 16th time, every year since the inception in 2007. 

Cal Lutheran swam right with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for almost the entirety of the game. The Regals scored first and went up 2-1 after the first quarter. After going up 3-1, the Athenas fired back and the score was tied 3-3 with 1:33 left in the half. The teams exchanged points all the way to the fourth as CMS held a 6-5 advantage with eight minutes to play. The Athenas made their moved scoring three straight and had a four-goal advantage with 3:48 to go. It was the deciding factor of the game as CMS held and advanced to the SCIAC Tournament championship. 

First Team All-SCIAC honoree Kemi Dijkstra led the team with a hat trick. Katie Knight was next with two goals and Kaitlin Gardhouse had one. 

Izzy De Souza, Second Team All-SCIAC, was in goal and combined with the defense to hold a strong Athena team to just nine goals. She made 14 saves, but took the loss.
