Regals Fall in Sudden Death to Toronto

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's water polo was defeated 10-9 in sudden death overtime by the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday afternoon. 

The Regals took an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Toronto flipped the script in the second quarter, outscoring the Regals 4-2, as Cal Lutheran had a 6-5 advantage at the break. Both defenses stepped it up in the second half. Toronto scored the lone goal of the third quarter and the game was tied. Both teams scored in the fourth and the game went to overtime. After scoring two goals each in overtime, the teams advanced to sudden death, and Toronto came away with the victory.  

Bethany Metcalfe had a hat trick and Kaitlin Gardhouse and Kemi Dijkstra added two goals each. Metcalfe dished out two assists, Reyna Clark had two drawn ejections and Gardhouse and Vianne Will tallied two steals.

Will and Izzy De Souza split time in goal. They both recorded seven saves and had five goals against. Will took the loss as Toronto overtook the Regals in the second half. 

The Regals continue the season with the Tina Finali Invitational. Cal Lutheran will take on Fresno Pacific at 8 a.m. and Ottawa (Ariz.) at 11:45 on Friday.
