THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Kemi Dijkstra scored five goals, Izzy De Souza made 14 saves, and Cal Lutheran women's water polo defeated Iona 11-7 on Monday afternoon.

The Regals won their third straight game as they took down the Division I opponent. Cal Lutheran is now 4-9 on the year.

The defense controlled the game and it started in goal as De Souza was impressive turning back shot after shot. On top of her saves she added three steals and an assist. Cal Lutheran totaled 10 saves in all. Kaitlin Gardhouse and Dijkstra had three steals each.

The Regals put themselves in good offensive positions with many power play opportunities. Gardhouse recorded four drawn ejections, Dijkstra was next with three and Katie Knight and Jacsen Donohue added two each.

Dijkstra had a game-high five goals and Bethany Metcalfe added two more. Gardhouse dished out four assists and Donohue had two more.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early lead with two goals, but Iona answered, and then took the lead with 29 seconds left in the first. The defense picked up in the second quarter and the score was tied 4-4 with six minutes remaining.

Over the next 10 minutes of game time, the Regals shutout and outscored the Gaels 3-0. At the end of the third, Cal Lutheran led 7-5. That was as close as the Gaels would get. The Regals added distance, and every time their opponent scored, they were there for an answer.

The Regals continue at home for their next contest. Cal Lutheran hosts Redlands on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
