Slow Start Hinders Regals Against CMS

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's water polo got off to a slow and wasn't able to recover as they lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-8 on Wednesday night. 

The Regals finished the regular season 12-14 overall and 8-4 in SCIAC play. They advance to the SCIAC Tournament and are the No. 3 seed. Cal Lutheran is at CMS on Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m. 

Katie Knight led her team with a hat trick, Kemi Dijkstra was next with two goals, and Jacsen Donohue, Kaitlin Gardhouse, and Bethany Metcalfe had one each. Dijkstra had two assists and four Regals had one more.

Izzy De Souza was in goal and totaled 11 saves and seven steals. She added one assist. Donohue and Gardhouse had two steals each and four more Regals had one each. 

It was a rough start for the Regals as the Athenas jumped out to a 5-1 lead. They continued to add to their lead and were up 8-3 at the half. CMS coasted through the third quarter and were up 10-5 with eight minutes left. The Regals outscored the Athenas 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but it was too late as CMS held on for the win.
