THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's water polo scored early and often as they defeated Whittier 12-6 on Wednesday night. 

The Regals improved to 3-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and 7-12 overall. 

Katie Knight led the way and impressed with a game-high five goals. Jacsen Donohue and Kaitlin Gardhouse were next with two each and Kemi Dijkstra, Bethany Metcalfe, and Tori Portillo had one.

Gardhouse and Dijkstra helped more the ball around with two assists each. Gardhouse showed off  a complete offensive game with three drawn ejections. 

Izzy De Souza was in the cage and recorded a massive 15 saves. The Regals defense was on fire and recorded 17 steals, with Dijkstra having the most with four. De Souza was next with three steals and Gardhouse and Metcalfe had two each. 

The Regals took a quick lead and were up as much as 5-1 early in the second quarter. Knight had a hat trick and Donohue added two more. Whittier slowly chipped away at the lead and Cal Lutheran was up 5-4 at the half. 

The Regals started the second half just like they did the first. Knight kept the points coming as she scored her fourth of the game. She added one more on the next possession and the Regals were on a roll. Gardhouse got in on the scoring action and her back-to-back goals put the Regals up 9-4 with 4:03 left in the third. 

De Souza was a force in the goal. She combined with the defense to shut down the Poets. Whittier finally broke through in the second half and trailed 9-5 with 2:05 remaining in the third. It was the same score as the teams headed to the fourth. The Regals coasted through the rest of the game and took down the Poets.

The Regals continue their season at home. Cal Lutheran hosts Caltech on Saturday at 11 a.m.
