Regals Take on Division I Competition on Day Two of Tina Finali Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran took on competition as tough as the weather as they faced off against Cal Baptist and Azusa Pacific on Saturday afternoon.

It was day two of the Tina Finali Invitational and the Regals fell in both games to their Division I opponents. They lost to Cal Baptist 16-9 and Azusa Pacific 16-10.

Against the Lancers, Jacsen Donohue, Katie Knight and Paige Woodside had two goals each. Kaitlin Gardhouse, Kemi Dijkstra and Megan Findlay added one goal each. Tori Portillo and Gardhouse kept the ball moving with two assists, and Dijkstra and Donohue added one. Gardhouse put the offense in good positions with four drawn ejections and Knight recorded two.

Izzy De Souza was in goal for the Regals and recorded 11 saves and two steals. Dijkstra led her squad with three steals and Gardhouse added two. 

The Lancers had the Regals' number in the first quarter and took a 4-1 lead. Cal Lutheran answered the call in the second quarter and both teams scored four each. Cal Baptist held the lead through the third and added to it in the fourth as they took down the Regals. 

Versus Azusa Pacific, Dijkstra led the way with eight goals and Gardhouse, Knight and Woodside added two each. Donohue and Gardhouse both dished out two assists and Gardhouse and Knight had two drawn ejections. 

Defensively, De Souza and Vianne Will split time in goal. De Souza had six saves and a steal and Will recorded four saves. Dijkstra led the defense with two steals. 

Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Cal Lutheran got on the board. The Regals would tie the game, but the Cougars would add another and go up 3-2 after one. Cal Lutheran kept battling with their D-I opponent and the game was tied 5-5 midway through the second. The Regals were right there at the half and only trailed 7-6.

The Cougars made their move in the second half and went up 12-7 with 1:39 remaining in the third. The Regals continued to fight and were down just 12-10 with 5:10 to go. That was as close as Cal Lutheran would get as Azusa Pacific picked up the win. 

The Regals hit the road for their next contest. Cal Lutheran will head to the Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif., and take on Cal State Fullerton and Villanova on Friday, March 3 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
