PASADENA, Calif. — Naomi Gipson scored 22 points as Cal Lutheran women's basketball ran past Caltech 81-58 on Saturday afternoon. This win brings their overall record to 12-8 and conference record to 6-6.
The Regals had 42 rebounds and forced 16 turnovers. They had a 78.6% free throw percentage and scored 32 points in the paint. After Gipson, Annie Winton and Janna Holley scored 14 points each.
Cal Lutheran led from start to finish as they handled Caltech in every category. The largest lead for the Regals was 28 points.
The Regals started the first quarter strong as Winton opened the game with a 3-point jump shot. The Regals managed to keep their momentum going, 8-2, before Caltech found their own opening, to try and catch up. The Regals didn't let them continue their run for long as they kept the ball rolling. The Regals made quick work of the Beavers as they took the first quarter 22-12.
The Beavers returned with a vengeance as they opened the second quarter with points, but the Regals refused to let them catch up as they dominated the court, going up 35-14. Caltech was finally able to find an opening in Cal Lutheran's defense and managed to climb higher with their score, 35-23. The Regals made sure to keep the Beavers down as they took the first half at 39-23.
The Regals kept their momentum going as they opened the third quarter, 41-23. The Beavers kept trying to make a comeback but Cal Lutheran never gave them the chance and lead 48-29. The Regals cruised through the rest of the quarter, going up 58-37.
The Regals returned undisturbed as they opened the fourth quarter and went up 60-37. The Regals dominated the rest of the way and won with a final score of 81-58.
The Regals' next game will be in Gilbert Arena against La Verne on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.
