THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball allowed just six points in the first and third quarters as they throttled George Fox 75-42 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Regals improved to 5-2 on the season as they held the Bruins to 31.3-percent shooting from the field and 17.6 from three-point range.
Interview with Janna Holley and Sara Mills
Cal Lutheran shot 42.4-percent from the field as 10 different Regals scored. Sara Mills scored a game-high 21 points on 50-percent shooting, and added four each of assists and steals.
Aliya DiMuro was next with 10 points and eight rebounds and Karina McMillan and Annie Winton both came off the bench and scored nine. Winton hit two three-pointers and had two steals.
Naomi Gipson added seven points, Alexa Greenwood had six and Janna Holley and Merci Turner had four each. Gipson matched DiMuro with a team-high eight rebounds and Holley dished out a team-high five assists.
The Regals forced George Fox into 29 turnovers, committing only 14 of their own, and scored 32 points off turnovers. Cal Lutheran scored 32 points in the paint, 16 fastbreak points and 33 bench points.
It was almost a wire-to-wire win for the Regals. Down 3-2, Cal Lutheran scored 18 straight points and had a 20-3 lead with 2:26 left in the quarter. The defense continued to dominate, which turned into good offense, as Winton's three at the buzzer put the Regals up 20-6 after the first quarter.
George Fox cut into the lead by a basket in the second quarter. The Bruins outscored the Regals 14-11, but the Regals had a 34-20 lead at the half.
Cal Lutheran's defense came out on fire in the third quarter, and with allowing just six points had a 56-26 lead after three. The Regals cruised through the fourth quarter and won their fifth game of the year.
The Regals are back in action tomorrow. In an exhibition, Cal Lutheran is at UC Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. After that, the Regals remain on the road and take Whitman on Wednesday, December 28, at 2 p.m.
