THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — On New Year's Day, Cal Lutheran women's basketball pushed its win streak to four as they downed Pacific Lutheran 73-62 on Sunday afternoon.
The Regals stayed undefeated at home, and after taking down their non-conference opponent, the Lutes, improved to 8-2 on the season.
Naomi Gipson led the way with 17 points and Janna Holley was next with 16. Sara Mills added nine, Karina McMillan had eight and Grace Godines and Annie Winton had seven each.
Gipson and Aliya DiMuro recorded seven rebounds each, Godines, Gipson and McMillan dished out three assists each and Holley and McMillan had three steals each.
In the first half, the Regals jumped out to an early lead, and whenever the Lutes got the score close, the Regals answered right back. With Cal Lutheran up 22-21 in the second quarter, they went on a 11-0 run. McMillian made a layup and converted on the three-point play, Gipson made three straight layups and added a free throw. A few plays later, Winton made a three to give Cal Lutheran its biggest lead of the first half, 35-32, with 1:17 to go. Holley capped off the half with a layup as Cal Lutheran led 37-28 at the break.
Cal Lutheran was tested in the second, with runs by Pacific Lutheran, but every time the Regals were able to thwart the comeback attempt. The Lutes cut the lead to 56-53 with 7:08, putting the Regals on the ropes. Cal Lutheran answered with a 9-2 run and pushed its lead back to 10. McMillian and Makena Tomlinson recorded back-to-back buckets to get the run started. Godines finished it off with a three and a layup. The Regals coasted the rest of the way and won the non-conference contest.
The Regals hit the road for their next contest. Cal Lutheran is at Occidental on Wednesday with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
