Regals Suffer First Loss, Fall to La Verne on the Road

LA VERNE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling to La Verne 77-63 on Wednesday night. 

The Regals dropped to 1-1 in conference and 3-1 overall. The Leopards improved to 3-0 in conference and are now 6-1.

Cal Lutheran was outscored in each of the first three quarters. With the game tied at 4-4, La Verne went on a 10-2 run and took an early lead. The Leopards led 20-11 after one quarter and looked to carry that momentum to the second. It was almost an even second quarter as La Verne held a 36-26 advantage at the break. The Regals could not cut into the deficit in the second half. Cal Lutheran was outscored 25-19 in third as they lead grew to 15. Cal Lutheran outscored La Verne 18-16 in the fourth, but took the loss 

Sara Mills scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Regals. She made all five of her free throws and added two three-pointers. She was all over the court with five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.

Makena Tomlinson came off the bench to score 10 points, Naomi Gipson was next with nine and Karina McMillian and Grace Godines had seven each. 

Tomlinson led the team with six rebounds and Alyssa Maxey and Janna Holley matched Mills with two assists.

It was a tough shooting night for both teams as La Verne was 33.3-percent from the field and Cal Lutheran was 30.9. La Verne shot 30.4-percent from three-point range as Cal Lutheran shot a lowly 16.7. The Leopards outrebounded the Regals 58-40, had more assists with 17-10 and had more second chance points with 16-to-4. 

The Regals have 10 days off before their next contest. Cal Lutheran will try to get back in the win column at Linfield (Ore.) on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m.
