SPOKANE, Wash. — Janna Holley led all scorers with 22 pints and Cal Lutheran women's basketball continued its hot start, taking down the Whitworth Pirates 66-47 on Thursday afternoon.
The Regals held their second straight opponent under 50 points and improved to 6-2. Cal Lutheran has held four of their last five opponents under 55 points. The defensive dominance continued against the Pirates as they could only muster five points in the fourth quarter.
Holley continued her impressive freshman campaign with all-around numbers, and on top of the game-high in points, added eight rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. Six of her rebounds were offensive.
Sara Mills and Karina McMillan were both in double-digits and added 12 each. Mills has been in double figures for seven of the eight games this year. Mills also recorded six rebounds, four steals and three assists while McMillan had three each of rebounds and steals and two assists.
Naomi Gipson had a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks and Aliya DiMuro added eight rebounds. Alexa Greenwood was a force on the defensive end with five steals.
The Regals forced the Pirates into 30 turnovers. Cal Lutheran turned those turnovers into 35 points, the big difference in the game. Another big difference was points in the paint, and it favored Cal Lutheran. The Regals scored 40 points in the paint and held the Pirates to only 14.
The game was close early on and had 14 ties and 12 lead changes in all. Whitworth led 30-29 at the half before Cal Lutheran turned it on. The Regals outscored the Pirates 22-12 in the third quarter and 15-5 in the fourth. Cal Lutheran coasted through the second half and picked up the win.
Up next, the Regals return home for a conference game. Cal Lutheran is hosting Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, New Year's Eve, at 5 p.m. The Kingsmen will play the Sagehens after, with tip-off set for around 7 p.m.
