Regals Take Down Pomona-Pitzer, Stay Undefeated at Home

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team remained undefeated at home as the Regals downed Pomona-Pitzer 65-51 on Saturday night.

Aliya DiMuro and Sara Mills were both a rebound shy of a double-double as the Regals improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in conference.

DiMuro had 13 points and nine rebounds while Mills added 11 points, nine rebounds and fpur assists. Janna Holley made it three Regals in double-digits with 10 points, six assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Karina McMillan came off the bench with nine points and Naomi Gipson added eight. Grace Godines had seven rebounds and five assists and Annie Winton had six points, 2 rebounds and two assists. 

Cal Lutheran began strong in the first quarter as Godines led the charge for the Regals with a layup. The Sagehens were quick to retaliate as they scored five points. Mills took the lead back for Cal Lutheran as she made a 3-point jump shot. The game was then put into a deadlock as both Pomona-Pitzer's and Cal Lutheran's defense held strong for three minutes. McMillan broke past Pitzer and scored another 3-point jump shot for Cal Lutheran. The Sagehens quickly followed up with a layup before taking the lead, sweeping the Regals as they scored seven more points bringing their sudden lead to 12-8. Both teams found themselves in another stand still of about two and a half minutes, but it was broken by Holley as she wove through Pitzer's defense. She made a 3-point jump shot in the last 15 seconds, but the Sagehens took the first quarter, 12-11.

The Regals came back strong into the second quarter as DiMuro made a free throw, tying the score. Cal Lutheran continued to carry their momentum as Holley and DiMuro raised the score to 12-16. Pitzer fired back as they scored a layup, but Gipson was quick to score her own layups. The Sagehens remained undeterred as they sunk the ball into the hoop, bringing the total score to 16-20. Pitzer continued to carry the momentum as they made more shots, taking the lead as their score flew to 29-20. Winton finally found an opening in the Sagehens defense as she made a 3-point jump shot. Cal Lutheran found their momentum as McMillan and Winton scored their own points, but the Sagehens held a 29-28 lead at the half.

Cal Lutheran returned to the third quarter reinvigorated and determined to win as Holley made a 3-point jump shot, taking the lead 29-31. Together the Regals bombarded the Sagehens as they raised their score to 29-37. Pomona-Pitzer tried bouncing back as they scored a layup and a 3-point jump shot, but Cal Lutheran held strong. DiMuro made two layups, bringing the score to 41-34 with the Regals holding the lead. The Sagehens continued to try and take the lead by making another 3-pointer, but Regal Makena Tomlinson answered with two layups. Pomona-Pitzer tried a scoring streak of their own as they raised the score to 45-41. Mills shut down the Sagehens efforts with a 3-point jump shot as Cal Lutheran took the third quarter, 20-12, and had a 48-41 lead going to the fourth. 

Cal Lutheran opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point jump shot by Mills. She was followed by Gipson who made a layup and brought their score to 53-41. The Sagehens made their own shot, but McMillan stopped the Sagehens from building any momentum as the score was 44-55. Pitzer countered by making another 3-pointer, but Godines made a layup soon after. The Sagehens tried again to take the lead by scoring four more points. Cal Lutheran instead only widened the lead as Mills, McMillan and Dimuro scored eight points. The final score rested at 65-51, with Cal Lutheran taking the win. 

Cal Lutheran's next game will be in Gilbert Arena against Pacific Lutheran on Sunday, New Year's Day, at 2 p.m.
