Holley Calls Game!; Regals Knock Off Redlands 64-61

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. Janna Holley hit a three-point game winner as time expired to lift Cal Lutheran to a 64-61 win over the Redlands Bulldogs on Saturday night.

With a timeout with 6.7 seconds left in the game, Head Coach Kelli DiMuro called timeout and drew up a play. Holley did the rest as she drilled the three-pointer as time expired. Cal Lutheran improved to 11-7 overall and 5-5 in conference as they knocked off the second-best team in the SCIAC.

Holley led Cal Lutheran with 19 points, hitting three three-pointers. She added seven rebounds and six assists.

Karina McMillan was next with 14 points and Aliya DiMuro added 11. Naomi Gipson had a team-high eight rebounds and Sara Mills had the most steals with three.

The Regals had 43 rebounds and just 10 turnovers. They had 40 points in the paint and a 55.6% free throw percentage. 

The game started strong as both defenses held their ground for about one minute and 30 seconds, before the Regals broke through. From there it was a fight as both teams traded shots, with Redlands barely in the lead. The Regals didn't give up as they narrowly stayed behind the Bulldogs, 16-14, but Redlands extended their lead took the first quarter 21-14. 

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter, but the Regals were itching for a comeback, 27-17. For a minute, both teams found themselves in another deadlock before the Regals found an opening, 27-19. Both teams continued to trade shots and the Regals slowly closed the gap. Redlands only led 33-27 at the half.

The Regals returned determined to make up the difference as the Bulldogs tried to keep them down. In just two minutes, the Regals turned the tide and took the lead 38-37. The Bulldogs didn't let the Regals hold it for long as they took back the lead, 39-38. The Regals refused to give up as they took back the lead once more, 43-41, and carried their momentum to 48-43. The Bulldogs tried to take back the lead, but the Regals had a 48-46 lead after three quarters.

The Regals opened the final quarter reinvigorated, going up 50-46. The Bulldogs were determined to win as they tied the game at 50-50. Both teams found themselves in another deadlock of nearly two minutes before Redlands broke through. The Regals were quick to tie the game once more. Both teams continued to trade shots over the few minutes and it all came down to the final plays. In the end it was the Regals who took the game with a buzzer beating 3-point jump shot.

The Regals' next game will be in Gilbert Arena against Occidental on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m.
