CLAREMONT, Calif. — Aliya DiMuro's shot at the end of regulation was called off and Cal Lutheran women's basketball was outlasted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 72-67 in overtime on Wednesday night.
Grace Godines recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Regals fell to 10-7 overall and 4-5 in conference.
Godines hit four three-pointers and grabbed four offensive rebounds as she was an offensive force for her team. She also dished out two assists and had two steals.
Janna Holley was next with 16 points and Sara Mills had 15 more. Holley dished out a game-high six assists and had four rebounds and Mills had seven rebounds and two assists.
The Athenas slowly began to pull ahead in the first, going up 10-4 before a comeback by the Regals. Cal Lutheran fought hard and eventually the game was tied at 14-14 after the first quarter. The Regals opened the second quarter with a basket and both teams then matched shots before the Athenas began to pull ahead again. The Regals tried to hold on, but fell short as the Stags took a 26-20 lead into the break.
The Regals returned reinvigorated as they opened the second half. Cal Lutheran tried to disrupt CMS' momentum, but the Athenas continued to lead 32-27. The Regals refused to give up and began to close the distance. Cal Lutheran then took the lead, 44-39, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps stayed right with them. The Athenas fought and managed a narrow 46-44 lead after the third quarter, 44-46.
CMS tried to pull away in the fourth, but Cal Lutheran stayed right behind. The teams continued to trade shots as neither team held the lead for long. Cal Lutheran really found their momentum as the tide began to change in their favor, going up 56-53. The Athenas didn't give up as the score was tied 61-61 after regulation. CMS outscored Cal Lutheran 11-6 in overtime and took the game.
Cal Lutheran will look to bounce back on Saturday as they host Redlands at 5 p.m.
