ORANGE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball defeated Chapman 73-65 in their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon. Cal Lutheran remains undefeated as its record stands 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Aliya Dimuro led her squad with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Naomi Gipson and Karina McMillan had 13 points each and Sara Mills added 11.
DiMuro recorded her second career double-double, Grace Godines matched her with 13 rebounds. Godines and Janna Holley dished out four assists each.
Chapman opened the first quarter, but the Regals bounced back quickly as they scored eight points before the Panthers found an opening for another point. Chapman scored two more points before Cal Lutheran held them there as the Regals made 12 points, bringing the score to 12-4. The Panthers didn't stay down for long as they managed to tie the game 14-14. Both teams traded shots back and forth before the first period ended with the Regals narrowly in the lead, 18-17.
The Panthers returned with a vengeance as they made the first shot, advancing the score 18-19. Cal Lutheran traded shots back and forth before tying with Chapman 24-24. For two minutes, both teams' defense held strong as there was a deadlock of no score before Godines broke it with a free throw. Cal Lutheran and Chapman traded shots as the second quarter ended 30-32, with Chapman taking the lead.
Chapman carried the momentum into the third quarter as they made another shot, bringing their lead to 34-30. Cal Lutheran held strong, but the Panther's offense was quick as they grew the difference in scores to 40-33. The Regals only played harder, determined to win as they brought the score to 43-39. Cal Lutheran continued to trade shots with Chapman before the third quarter ended with the Regals falling short 52-46.
The Regals came back into the final quarter reinvigorated as they made the first shot. The Panthers refused to let them score, but the Regals continued to fight and eventually took the lead 66-61. Cal Lutheran furthered their gap as they held Chapman back 72-65. McMillan made the final free throw in the last two seconds, capping off Cal Lutheran's victory 73-65.
Cal Lutheran made 52 points in the paint, had 52 rebounds, and 18 turnovers. The Regals outscored the PAnthers 27-13 in the fourth as they took the game.
The Regals' next game will be at La Verne Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.
