Golden Goal Lifts Kingsmen over La Verne

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif – Cal Lutheran Men's Soccer improved their SCIAC record to 4-1-1 with a come from behind victory over the University of La Verne Leopards. The Kingsmen sweep the season series with the overtime win.

The fist half saw the Kingsmen dominate possession while the Leopards came away with only short burst of counter attack to pressure the Cal Lu defense. The first half ended with the Kingsmen leading in shots 5-1 but neither net breached.

The Leopards opened the scoring in the 67th minute with a well placed shot from the left side of the box that brushed the right post as it snuck in for the 1-0 lead.

The Kingsmen continued to control possession and began to more aggressively go at goal. Strong offerings from JP Melgoza and Michael Bogart excited the crowd by didn't manage to find the mark.

A Flurry of chances led to senior Christian Gonzalez finding fellow senior Erick Mejia who drove it home from 5 yards out to tie the match.

Despite more strong chances from CLU, regulation time ended with the score 1-1.

The pace of play continued to be high in overtime with both teams looking for long passes to get over the last lines of defense. Both back lines held strong and the first overtime remained scoreless.

In the second overtime period, the 108th minute of the match, Christian Gonzalez beat a defender in the box and drew a foul that led to the Kingsmen being awarded a penalty kick. Senior Igor Lumbrano won the one on one battle with the Leopard keeper to put the match away.

The Kingsmen finished the match with 19 shots to the Leopard's 5.

Cal Lutheran will look to avenge their only conference loss of the season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in William Rolland Stadium on Saturday at 7pm.
