Mendoza, Vargas First Team All-SCIAC, Edwards Named to Second Team; Avalos Earns Character Award

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. Ariana Mendoza and Olivia Vargas earned All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) First Team honors, Casey Edwards was named Second Team, and Genevieve Avalos was selected for the Character Award, the conference announced Tuesday morning.

The quartet represents Cal Lutheran softball on the yearly awards. For the first time since 2018, the Regals had two First Team honorees. It is also the first time since 2019 that three have garnered All-SCIAC status. 

Mendoza (Granada Hills, Calif.) earned her second career All-SCIAC honor and was named First Team. She played in all 21 conference games mainly as the designated player. She recorded a .375 batting average, which is fourth in the SCIAC, and had an on base percentage of .420. She tallied 24 hits, which was the fourth most in conference, including two home runs and three doubles, with five RBI. She also scored seven runs and drew one walk. She had a perfect fielding percentage with 14 putouts.  

Vargas (Fillmore, Calif.) garnered her first All-SCIAC honor and made it two Regals on First Team. Vargas played in all 21 games at third base and had a batting average of .354. She recorded 23 hits, including two home runs and five doubles. She had the seventh most hits and doubles in the SCIAC. She was first in the conference with 16 BI and added 10 runs. She drew two walks, had one sacrifice fly and one stolen base. She had a fielding percentage of .972 with 29 putouts and 77 assists. 

Edwards (Valencia, Calif.) was impressive in her freshman campaign and was selected to the Second Team. She is a starting pitcher for the Regals and also did some batting. She started 13 games and pitched 12 complete games. In her 84.1 innings pitched, she had an earned run average of 2.66. She recorded five wins and had two shutouts. Her complete games and shutouts were first in the conference. At the plate, she had a batting average of .330. She recorded a home run and a double with six RBI and three runs. 

Avalos (Granada Hills, Calif.) earned the Character Award after overcoming injury and illness adversity over more than a year. An outstanding competitor and teammate despite facing so many challenges over recent years, she is also active on campus as a residential advisor and four-year Scholar Athlete. She played in 12 conference games at the centerfield position. She had a perfect fielding percentage with 10 putouts. She had four hits and scored two runs. She added one stolen base.
