Pitcher’s Duel As Pomona-Pitzer Gets Past Regals in Series Opener

Pitcher’s Duel As Pomona-Pitzer Gets Past Regals in Series Opener

ORANGE, Calif. — Casey Edwards and Cal Lutheran softball were in a pitcher's duel with Pomona-Pitzer to start a three-game series on Friday afternoon. The Regals scored first, but the Sagehens answered in the same inning, and held on for the 2-1 win.

The loss drops the Regals to 7-13 overall and 0-7 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play.

Edwards pitched a complete game, her 11th of the year, but took the loss. She has pitched a complete game in every outing this year. She was impressive in her 6.0 innings, and gave up only four hits and two earned runs.

The Regals struck first, in the third inning, as Olivia Vargas singled to right center, scoring Ashley Membrere. The Sagehens answered in the bottom of the inning. Off one pitch, Pomona-Pitzer scored two runs, and stole the lead.

Cal Lutheran was shut down in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning. The Regals look to make their move in the seventh. Mia Antonino was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With one out, Ally Macapagal singled to left, moving Brooke DeSmet to second base. That was close as the Regals would get as the Sagehens got the final two outs.

Makayla Lopez, Natalie Luna, Vargas and Macapagal all recorded a hit in the game.

The series continues tomorrow at Cal Lutheran. The Regals and Sagehens start a doubleheader at 12 p.m. to decide the series.
