THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Casey Edwards pitched a complete game shutout in the first game of a doubleheader as Cal Lutheran softball defeated Puget Sound 5-0 on Thursday Afternoon. The Loggers took the second game 8-3.

Edwards put on a pitching clinic in the first and had a perfect game through 5.1 innings. The Loggers got a walk, but that was it, as the Regals turned a double play on the next batter.

The no-hitter was still intact, but two hits in the top of the seventh took it away. Edwards settled for a complete game shutout with an impressive showing. In 7.0 innings, she struck out four, and allowed just the two hits and a the walk.

The Regals broke through with three runs in the fourth. With a runner on first, Arianna Mendoza doubled to left center and Olivia Vargas raced home to score. A few batters later, Edwards hit a sacrifice fly as she helped out her cause in the win. The third run came off a single from Natalie Luna, which turned into her scoring after an error from the right fielder. The Regals added insurance runs, scoring once in the fifth and sixth innings. Ashley Membrere and Mia Antonino recorded the RBI.

Cal Lutheran took the first game and looked to carry that momentum into the second. Brooke DeSmet was in the circle for game two. She pitched the beginning, and the end, with Paige Henry going in the middle. DeSmet went 4.2 innings with six hits and five earned runs. Henry went 2.1 innings and had four hits and three runs, two of which were earned.

Puget Sound scored first in the top of the second and Cal Lutheran answered in the bottom. Reagan Laubscher singled, driving in Abby Lockman. The very next inning, the Regals took the lead. Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly to center as Vargas came home to score.

After that, it was all Loggers as they scored two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and fourth in the seventh. The Regals threatened in the seventh, but the Loggers held on for the win.

The Regals are back in action on Saturday. Cal Lutheran will host Lewis & Clark for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
