THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran softball got a win on opening day as the Regals defeated Pacific (Ore.) 3-2 in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Boxers took the first game 4-2. 

Brooke DeSmet got the first win of the year as she was in the circle for the second game. She pitched 4.0 innings, striking out one, giving up just three hits and one walk. Paige Henry pitched the next three innings and got the save. She struck out two while giving up three hits, two earned runs and three walks.

Ariana Mendoza delivered 2 RBI and Makayla Lopez had the other. Lopez tallied two hits, a double and a triple. 

The Regals got on the board in the bottom of the first as Mendoza singled up the middle, scoring Lopez. The Boxers threatened in the top of the third, but with runners on the corners, DeSmet got the Boxer batter to pop up. 

Cal Lutheran added to their lead in the third. Mendoza singled to third base as Nadia Collins raced home to score. Pacific got one run back in the top of the fifth, and almost got more. With the bases loaded, Natalie Luna made a fantastic play at second base, throwing the runner out at first.

The Regals scored their third run in the fifth, off Lopez's single, scoring Genevieve Avalos. It was the deciding run as Cal Lutheran held on for the win.

In game one, Casey Edwards pitched a complete game. Over the 7.0 innings, she struck out six batters, giving up four earned runs of 11 hits. 

Hanna Booth and Edwards both recorded a RBI and Lopez added another three hits to her day. Ashley Membrere scored one of the runs and added two hits. Olivia Vargas scored the other run. 

The Regals opened the season with fireworks, scoring two runs in the bottom the first. The Boxers finally broke through in the fourth and tied the game at 2-2. Pacific then shocked the Regals as they scored two runs in the top of the seventh and won the game. 

The Regals continue the season at home and host Puget Sound on Thursday with a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
