THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran softball earned its first sweep of the year as the Regals defeated Wittenberg twice on Thursday afternoon. They won the first game 3-1, the second game 10-8, and improved to 6-5 on the year.
The Regals won with pitching in game one and the bats in game two. Casey Edwards pitched a complete game in the first. In her 7.0 innings, she allowed just three hits and one earned run, while striking out two.
Cal Lutheran took the lead in the first as Abby Lockmann doubled to right center, scoring Makayla Lopez. The Regals added their next two in the third. With the bases loaded, Lockmann walked for her second RBI of the day. The Regals got their third run off an error, put in play by Mia Antonino, and it was the insurance run they needed. The Tigers scored one run in the seventh as Cal Lutheran took the game.
The bats came alive in the second. Regan Laubscher led the way with four RBI. Lopez was next with two and Brooke DeSmet and Genevieve Avalos added one each.
Paige Henry pitched the first four innings while DeSmet threw the final three. DeSmet got the win as gave up just three hits and two earned runs. She recorded two strikeouts and only walked one.
Wittenberg took the early in game two and scored three runs in the top of the second. The game went back-and-forth as the Regals scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Laubsher and Lopez both doubled to get the bats rolling.
It was a clean third inning before the runs picked back up in the fourth. The Tigers scored three and took a 6-5 lead. Cal Lutheran put up another five-spot in the bottom of the fifth. The big play was Laubscher smashing a double with bases loaded. The hits helped the Regals take a 10-6 lead with two innings to go. Wittenberg got two runs in the sixth, but it was not enough, as the Regals got their first sweep of the season.
The Regals continue the season at home and are back in action on Sunday. Cal Lutheran hosts North Central (Ill.) for a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 12 p.m.
