THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. —Olivia Vargas and Ariana Mendoza hit a home run, Casey Edwards pitched a two-hit gem, and Cal Lutheran softball powered past Occidental 8-0 on Friday afternoon.  

Edwards started on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings, a complete game, as the Regals recorded a mercy against the Tigers. She faced 20 batters, allowing just two hits, with one strikeout. 

The Regals started strong as Vargas hit a double, bringing home Ashley Membrere in the bottom of the first. The Tigers tried to score in the second inning, but their bats couldn't find the ball as they came up empty.

Vargas continued her big day with a home run that sailed out of center field at the bottom of the third, putting Cal Lutheran up 3-0. The Regals kept the points coming as Mia Antonino tripled, bringing Edwards and Mendoza home. Brooke DeSmet added a double and Antonino raced home. Jamie Bingaman wrapped up the inning with a single, raising the lead to 7-0, as DeSmet ran home. 

Mendoza added another run in the bottom of the fourth.  Her solo shot put her team up eight runs with the chance for a mercy. The Tigers had one last opportunity, in the top of the fifth, but Edwards shut the door and picked up the win.  

The Regals next game is Saturday. The series continues at Oxy and starts at 12 p.m.
