Regals Continue Top Level Games Against #3 CMS

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University's Women's Water Polo team continued their week of top 3 challenges by hosting the #3 Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Athenas made the most of the opening period, taking a 2 goal lead.

Senior Jessica Diaz found the back of the net to bring the Regals within one but CMS was able to answer with a goal of their own just 34 seconds later to close out the half up 3-1.

CMS extended their lead early in the second half with a goal to go up 4-1.

After a Cal Lutheran time out, the Regals were able to change the tide of the game. Senior Lexi Rond beat the Athena goalie to make the score 4-2. Then junior Bethany Metcalfe scored to bring the Regals within one.

The Athenas grabbed another goal to gain some breathing room, but the Regals' offensive pressure continued as sophomore Jacsen Donohue's aggressive shooting payed off just 12 seconds later to make the score 5-4.

Despite a flurry of offense from the Regals as time ticked down, they were unable to score the equalizer before the final horn.

The Regal defense was led in what proved to be a low scoring affair by Izzy De Souza's 6 saves in goal and 3 steals along with Jessica Diaz's 2 steals and 3 field blocks.

The Regals head back on the road on Wednesday for a matchup against #4 Whittier at 7pm.
