Regals Drop SCIAC Opener to Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. — California Lutheran University took a tough loss as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the game-winner with one second left on the clock and the Regals fell 8-7 on Wednesday afternoon.

It was just the second game of the season for the Regals, but the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener, and they are now 0-2 on the young season.

Jessica Diaz, Katherine Knight and Lexi Rond combined for six goals, scoring two goals each. Bethany Metcalfe added the other goal. Kemi Dijkstra and Rond drew two exclusions each to set the Regals up in good positions.

Diaz impressed on defense with three steals, as she led the team. Izzy De Souza was in goal and made 11 saves, but it was just barely not enough.

The Regals found themselves in a quick hole. After Rond scored the opener, CMS answered with three straight goals and led 3-1 with 1:03 left in the half.

Cal Lutheran scored four of the next five goals and took a 5-4 lead with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Regals used another 2-1 run and had a 7-5 lead with 5:33 left in the game.

The game fell apart after that for the Regals as they allowed three goals down the stretch and took the loss.

The Regals continue their season and have their home opener this Friday. Cal Lutheran host the Tina Finali Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Regals start the tournament with Cal St. Monterey Bay on Friday morning at 8 a.m. and then play Austin at 11:45.
