Regals Defeat #5 La Verne 14-9

LA VERNE, Calif. — The #7 ranked California Lutheran University women's water polo team took on the #5 Leopards of the University of La Verne on Wednesday afternoon. The Regals got back into the win column with a 14-9 victory.

La Verne scored the first two goals and held the Regals off the board until the 2:50 mark of the first quarter when senior Jess Diaz found the back of the net to cut the score to 2-1. Katherine Knight would score to bring Cal Lutheran even at 2-2.

With 45 seconds left in the first the Leopards pulled ahead, but the Regals' Maddie Stuart scored with just 8 seconds left to send the teams into the break tied at 3-3.

The second quarter started with Bethany Metcalfe scoring three goals before the Leopards were able to pick up two.

With a 6-5 lead, the Regals again finished strong behind goals from Jess Diaz and Jacsen Donohue to finish the first half up 8-5.

The Leopards picked up three goals in the third period. The Regals matched that total with goals from Lexi Rond, Katherine Knight, and Kaitlin Gardhouse.

The fourth quarter began with Knight and Gardhouse each scoring to give Cal Lutheran room to breathe. The Leopards picked up one more, but the Regals shut the door with a Lexi Rond goal to end the game at 14-9.

The stellar play of goal keeper Izzy De Souza was a huge factor as she racked up 11 saves in the game.

Cal Lutheran will face off against Cal Tech on Saturday at 10:30am.
