Third Time’s the Charm as Kingsmen Defeat Chapman; Head to SCIAC Semis

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo got its revenge against Chapman in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament First Round with a 17-14 win on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Kingsmen lost their first two matches of the year to the Panthers. With this win, they are off to the semifinals to take on No. 2 Occidental. The game is at Oxy on Friday at 7 p.m. 

First Team All-SCIAC honorees Ben Brown and Dillon Goldsmith led the way for the Kingsmen. Brown tallied five goals, four assists and three steals while Goldsmith had four goals, three drawn ejections and two steals. 

Luke Matthies added four goals and David Brandt and Taylor Garcia had two each. Bo DuBois was in goal and got the win. He recorded seven saves and two steals. 

The game went back and forth, was tied eight times and had four lead changes. Chapman had a slight lead and was up 5-4 at the end of the first. Cal Lutheran flipped the script in the second quarter and had a 10-9 lead at the break. 

The teams answered and exchanged goals in the third as the Kingsmen scored with 48 seconds left and took a 14-13 lead to the fourth. The Cal Lutheran defense stepped up in the fourth and outscored Chapman 3-1 to seal the win.
