Kingsmen Compete at Gary Troyer Tournament; Defeat Division I Long Island

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo took a break from conference play and competed at the Gary Troyer Tournament, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, La Verne, Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer. The tourney featured 24 programs from across the country.

Cal Lutheran started competition on Friday and took on Division I  opponents Air Force and Long Island. The Kingsmen were defeated by the Falcons of Air Force, 19-10, and dominated the Sharks of Long Island, 25-10. 

In the first game of the day against Air Force, the Kingsmen started strong and were up 2-1 after the first quarter and down just 6-5 at the half. The Falcons got things going in the second outscoring the Kingsmen 7-3 in the third and 6-2 in the fourth. 

Dillon Goldsmith and Ben Brown led the charge for the Kingsmen with four and three goals, respectively. David Brant and Johnny Wotawa put Cal Lutheran in good, offensive positions as they both tallied two drawn exclusions. 

Bo DuBois was in the cage for Cal Lutheran. He recorded six saves as he took the loss. Ten different Kingsmen recorded a steal as Lincoln Hall had the most with two.

Cal Lutheran looked to turn things around in their second game as they took on Long Island. The Kingsmen did just that as they jumped all over the Sharks and had a 9-3 lead after the first quarter. The first half set the tone as Cal Lutheran outscored their opponent 9-6 in the second and had a 15-5 lead at the break. They carried that momentum throughout the rest of the game. 

Goldsmith scored four goals for the second straight game and Brown and Luke Matthies both added a hat trick. 14 different Kingsmen scored and seven had an assist. Brown had the most assists with five. Goldsmith recorded the most drawn exclusions with four.

Daniel Johnson got the start and the win as he played three quarters. Daniel Parr played the fourth as the Kingsmen earned a huge win. Parr made eight saves and Johnson had three. Cole Weiderman led the team with three steals. 

The Kingsmen continued the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday. Cal Lutheran is set to take McKendree at 9 a.m. and Loyola Marymount at 3:20 p.m.
