Kingsmen Battle Div. I Navy, Iona on Day Two of Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo showed they can compete with top teams in the country as they battled, but were defeated by Navy 16-11 and Iona 14-13 on day two of the Navy Open.

Cal Lutheran started day two with the host of the tournament, Navy. Ben Brown was efficient, taking seven shots, and scoring five times. Taylor Garcia added a hat trick and Lincoln Hall added two more. 

On defense, six Kingsmen recorded a steal, with Jack Bradbury, Brown, Garcia and Luke Matthies each having two. Bo DuBois was in goal and recorded 10 saves and had two steals. 

The Kingsmen put up a tough fight, but ultimately it was the Div. I opponent that took over. Cal Lutheran was in an early deficit of 5-3 after the first quarter and the Midshipmen held that advantage the rest of they way, slowly adding to the distance. 

Against Iona, Dillon Goldsmith led the way with five goals and Brown added a hat trick. Seven Kingsmen recorded an assist with David Brandt, Brown and Adam Dow having two each. 

DuBois continued in goal and had five saves. Brown and Matthies both had two steals while six Kingsmen added one more. 

It was a close game that went back-and-forth the entire way. Iona took an early lead and were up two after the first. Cal Lutheran cut the lead to one at the half and the score was 6-5 at the break. The Kingsmen tied up the game in the third, but Iona outscored the Purple and Gold by one in the final quarter. 

Cal Lutheran continues the season on the East Coast. The Kingsmen head to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Invitational and start on Friday with George Washington (D.C.) at 5 a.m. PST.
