Kingsmen Defeat Div. I Bucknell for the First Time in Program History, Take Down Div. III Johns Hopkins to Start 2022 Campaign

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo started the 2022 season at the Naval Academy for the Navy Open on Saturday. The Kingsmen defeated Division I opponent Bucknell 13-12 to start the day and finished with throttling Div. III foe Johns Hopkins 17-11. 

The Kingsmen made history as they took down the Bison of Bucknell for the first time in program history. 

Cal Lutheran started strong and took a 12-8 lead to the fourth. The Kingsmen outscored the Bison by two points in both the second and third quarter. The Bison bounced back and cut the lead to one at 13-12. The defense stepped up and made three stops down the stretch as they took down the Div. I opponent.

Bo DuBois was in goal and got the win in his collegiate debut. He made seven steals as the defense forced 14 steals. Dillon Goldsmith led the team with five, Luke Matthies, competing in his first collegiate game, made three and Cole Weiderman added two. 

Goldsmith and fellow senior Ben Brown were electric for the Kingsmen as they both scored four goals dished out three assists. Matthies added two goals Goldsmith and Weiderman both tallied two drawn ejections. 

The second game of the day was with the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins. Brown and Goldsmith continued to lead the way as they both put up five goals. Weiderman added a hat trick and Johnny Wotawa added two more. Seven Kingsmen recorded an assist and Brown had the most with five. 

The defense put the pressure on the Blue Jays and recorded 12 steals. Goldsmith had three and Lincoln Hall and Jack Bradbury had two each. Daniel Parr was in the cage and got the win with 10 saves.

The Kingsmen are back in the water tomorrow and look to keep their undefeated streak alive. Cal Lutheran will play Navy at 6:15 a.m. PST and Iona at 9:30 a.m.
