THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — A furious rally for Cal Lutheran men's water polo came up just short as the Kingsmen were defeated by the Chapman Panthers 14-13 on Wednesday afternoon..

With the loss Cal Lutheran is now 4-3 in SCIAC and 10-13 overall. Chapman got closer to .500 in SCIAC and is 3-4 and 10-11 overall.

Ben Brown and Dillon Goldsmith both recorded a hat trick and David Brandt added two more goals. Brown and Bryan Lynch had a team-high with three assists and Brown, Adam Dow, Taylor Garcia and Cole Weiderman added two drawn ejections each.

Defensively, Bo DuBois was in the cage for the Kingsmen. He recorded nine saves, but suffered the loss. The Cal Lutheran defense recorded five saves and made big plays in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Chapman held on for the win.

The teams exchanged goals in the first quarter as both held the lead at different times. Chapman scored the final goal of the quarter and had a 4-3 lead heading to the second.

The Kingsmen got the first goal, and tied the game, before Chapman scored three straight, taking their largest lead so far. The teams went back-and-forth scoring over the final minutes of the quarter and Chapman held a 9-6 advantage at the break.

Chapman started the third quarter right where they left on the second and scored on their first possession. Cal Lutheran started chipping away at the lead and scored the next two goals, but the Panthers answered with two of their own and had a 12-8 lead after three. The Kingsmen had one final rally but could not recover from the early deficit and fell to the Panthers.

Cal Lutheran has the weekend off and are back in action next Wednesday. The Kingsmen are on the road and take on Redlands at 7 p.m.
