Ferrier and McCardell Earn SCIAC AOW Honors

LOS ANGELES – This afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week Twenty-seven Athlete of the Week honorees. A pair of Cal Lutheran golfers Tyler Ferrier and Marissa McCardell garnered the awards this week for their respective teams after their performance at the Centenary/Hal Sutton Invite in Bossier City, La.

On Monday, March 19, Ferrier tied for first in day one of the tournament, shooting one-over-par at 73. He shot an 80 on day two and finished at 9-over-par with 153 strokes and tied for second with teammate Ryan Kyaw overall. The Kingsmen though stayed steady as a whole to finish first amongst the eight teams at 38-over-par.

The senior out of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. averaged 77.77 over 13 rounds of action last year, appearing in all seven SCIAC rounds. He recorded a season-best score of 74 twice, including once at the SCIAC Championships where he tallied a score of 232 with an eagle and two birdies.

For the women, McCardell tied for second in round one of the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate, firing six-over-par alongside teammate Erica Mitchell and just one stroke behind the first place leader and teammate Allison Gaskill. Her 81-performance on day two though propelled her into first, shooting 159 as a whole and leading the team to a first-place victory.

The award is the sophomore's second this season. Last year, she was named to the All-SCIAC Second Team, averaging 81.68 over 19 rounds of play. She additionally shot a season-best 77 at the SCIAC Championships and was inducted into the CLU Scholar-Athlete Society.

The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
