THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's and women's soccer teams were both on the road Wednesday night. The Regals defeated the Whittier College Poets 2-1 in double overtime as Maddy Griess scored the game winner. The Kingsmen took on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags and tied 1-1.
Regals Soccer (CLU 2, WC 1 (2OT))
The United Soccer Coaches released its weekly poll earlier today and Cal Lutheran garnered its first national ranking of the year as the Regals came in at No. 25. After receiving its ranking, CLU took to the pitch against Whittier at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
Whittier got on the board first as Clarissa Field found Leah Kolek who scored the goal in the 42nd minute. The Regals would answer six minutes into the second half as Trinity Martinez had the equalizer and scored her second goal of the season.
Regulation ended with a score of 1-1 and the game went to overtime. Both teams had shots but couldn't convert in the first overtime period. In the second overtime, Griess gave the Regals the win in the 109th minute as the team improved to 9-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. With the loss, Whittier is now 6-5 and 2-5.
Gabby Flores was in the goal for the Regals and recorded five saves and improved her record to 5-1.
Kingsmen Soccer (CLU 1, CMS 1 (2OT))
Cal Lutheran remains in second-place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) after the Kingsmen tied the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags 1-1 at John Pritzlaff Field. CLU is now 7-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in SCIAC play. CMS is 2-7-1 and 2-5-1.
The Kingsmen made it 1-0 in the 27th minute as Max Sharpe received a pass from Danny Pacheco and fired the ball into the back of the net. It was Sharpe's first goal of the season and Pacheco's second assist.
In the second half, the Stags would knot the score at 1-1 as Matthew Swift scored in the 59th minute. Nate Huntington had the assist. That would be all the scoring as the teams tied 1-1 in double overtime.
Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Eduardo Garcia made some keys blocks down the stretch to keep the game even. He tallied nine saves throughout the game.
The Kingsmen and Regals continue the season on the road. The men travel to Pasadena, Calif., to take on Caltech Wednesday at 4 p.m. and the women will take on Redlands Saturday at 11 a.m. in Redlands, Calif.
