Road Recap: MWP Knocks off Occidental; WS ties with CMS

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team and women's soccer team were both on the road Wednesday night at Occidental and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, respectively.

Kingsmen Water Polo (CLU 14, OXY 12)

In the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener for Cal Lutheran, the Kingsmen traveled to Occidental and came out with a 14-12 win. This is the second-straight win for CLU.

The Violet and Gold were led by Davey Thomas who scored a team-high five goals. CLU's Taggart Diehl, Chris Gardhouse, George French and George Lundgren each tallied two goals and Stephen Blaauw added one more.

Occidental outshot Cal Lutheran 35-27, but it was the Kingsmen that had the better shooting percentage with .519 compared to .343.

Nick Loomis was in the goal for CLU and made 10 saves with a .455 saving percentage.  

Cal Lutheran (2-5) took the lead after the first quarter and was up 4-2. CLU never looked back and had the lead for the rest of the match. Each team scored three goals in the second. Occidental cut the lead to one after the third as they outscored CLU 4-3. The Kingsmen bounced back in the final quarter as they scored four goals and only allowed three as they claimed the match.

Regals Soccer (CLU 1, CMS 1 (2OT))

The Regals (4-1-1) traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a SCIAC showdown with the Athenas and the game went the distance as the score was tied 1-1 at the end of double-overtime.

The game saw no goals in the first half, but wasn't lacking in the shots department. CLU had seven shots while CMS took four.

Cal Lutheran got on the board first in the 68th minute. Trinity Martinez took a corner kick and connected with Kali Youngdahl as she headed the ball into the back of the net.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tied the game in the 74th minute. Sarah Malott received a pass from Sarah Tocher and scored with a shot from just inside the box.

The Kingsmen water polo team continues the season at home and hosts La Verne Saturday at 11 a.m. The Regals soccer team stays on the road and travels to Occidental for a matchup Saturday at 7 p.m.
