Swimming & Diving Compete at SCIAC Championships

LOS ANGELES — The 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships are set to take place Wednesday through Saturday, February 21-24 at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif.

On the women's side, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is aiming to defend its championship win in 2017 as the Athenas have won 14 of the last 15 conference team championships. Pomona-Pitzer made a splash in 2017-18 with an 8-0 dual meet record, while the Athenas (7-1) and Cal Lutheran (6-2) followed.

Regals with top times in the SCIAC are Mardell Ramirez, Jessi Van der Laan and Grace Sanchez. Ramiraz has the fastest time in the 200 free with a quick time of 53.50 seconds. She also ranks third in the 200-meter backstroke (2:07.21) and the 400-meter individual medley (4:43.92). She is fourth in the 500-meter freestyle (5:12.43) and the 50-meter butterfly (27.44).

Sanchez currently ranks third in the 100-meter free (53.03) and fourth in the 50-meter free (24.27). Van der Laan is first in the 50-back with a time of 26.03.

For the men, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) is looking for its 11th consecutive team championship. The Stags posted a 2017-18 dual meet record of 8-0, while Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental take the deck following respective campaigns of 7-1 and 6-2 against SCIAC competition.

Cal Lutheran's Jonah Hobbs and Andreas Nybo have top times for the Kingsmen. Hobbs ranks third in the 1,650-meter free (16:26.50), fifth in the 1,000-meter free (9:55.32) and seventh in the 500-meter free (4:43.25). Nybo currently ranks third in the 200-meter fly (1:52.98), fifth in the 50-meter breaststroke (27.52) and seventh on the 200-meter breast (2:08.09).

Action for the 2018 SCIAC Championships is set to begin Wednesday, February 21 with the men's 3-meter diving preliminaries at 10:30 a.m.
