THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On homecoming Saturday, seven teams were in competition, with four on the road. The Kingsmen and Regals cross country teams competed in the morning, Kingsmen water polo was in action in the afternoon and Kingsmen soccer capped off the night on the pitch.
Regals Cross Country (Place – 11th) – Results
The Cal Lutheran women's cross country team competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite Saturday morning at Blanchard Park Wash. The Regals finished in 11th place out of 13 teams. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the event with an average time of 22:34.34
The top finisher for Cal Lutheran was Rachel Ereso as she placed 24th with a quick time of 23 minutes and 45.79 seconds. Erin MacNeil was the second Regal to cross the line and clocked in at 25:15.12. Kylie Rodriguez and Katie Young finished third and fourth with times of 25:27.6 and 25:57.2, respectively. Rounding out the top-five times for the Regals was Mariah Mercado as she came in at 26:26.92.
Kingsmen Cross Country (Place – 10th) – Results
The Kingsmen competed right after the women at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite and placed 10th out of 12 teams at Blanchard Park Wash.
Cal Lutheran's Timothy Kahovec paced the Kingsmen and placed 22nd with a time of 26:34.61. Christian Rider was the second Kingsmen to finish and Nikita Khromets was right behind him with times of 27:46.71 and 27:48.57, respectively. Cal Lutheran's Connor Neufeld-Griffin had the fourth-top time for the Kingsmen with 27:57.49. Rounding out the Violet and Gold's top-five times was Henry Friederichs as he crossed the line at 28:31.41.
Kingsmen Water Polo (CMS 11, CLU 10)
Cal Lutheran matched up with the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags Saturday afternoon in Claremont, Calif., and came up short as the Stags pulled out the win 11-10.
The Stags got off to a strong start, but the Kingsmen fought back. With 4:34 left in the game, Chris Gardhouse to make it a one possession game at 10-9. In the end, CMS was able to hold on to the lead and fend off the Kingsmen.
Davey Thomas led the Kingsmen with three goals. Mats Albins, Taggart Diehl, and Gardhouse each scored two goals for the Violet and Gold. Defesively, George French had four steals. Albins, Wyatt Lowe and Ramon Olivier V both had three steals. Nick Loomis was in the goal for the Kingsmen and made seven saves.
Kingsmen Soccer (CLU 1, OXY 0)
Cal Lutheran traveled to Occidental for its homecoming match with the Tigers. The first half was very defensive as the Kingsmen only got off two shots on goal and the Tigers only had one. The only score of the half came in the 14th minute. Occidental was called for a foul in the box. Brandon Kearney gave the Kingsmen the lead as he converted on the penalty kick.
The second half was all about defense and neither team could get anything going. Cal Luthern came out on top 1-0 and improved to 9-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in SCIAC play. Max Sharpe tallied the most shots on goal for the Kingsmen with three. Eduardo Garcia improved to 8-3-1 on the season and tallied two saves.
Both cross country teams will continue the season with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships Oct. 28. The Kingsmen water polo team continues the season on the road and travels to Caltech Tuesday. The men's soccer team returns home for its next match and will host Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday at 7:30.
