Swimming and Diving Claims Eight Events

 

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran swimming and diving team won eight events titles Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Challenge in the Haldeman Aquatics Center. The men and women defeated Caltech, but lost to Pomona-Pitzer.

The Kingsmen claimed a total of five titles as Jonah Hobbs and Andreas Nybo each won two apiece.

Hobbs won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16 minutes and 26.50 seconds and the 500-yard free with 4:43.25. Nybo raced to a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with 1:52.98 and the 200-yard breaststroke with 2:09.48.

The men's fifth title came in the 400-yard free relay as Thelen Mckinna-Worrell, Jacob Frigard, Zach Zamecki and Liam McCallum combined for the win with a time 3:11.64.

The Violet and Gold were runner-up in three more events. Frigard finished the 100-yard fly in second with 51.50, Nybo finished the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.25 and Zach Zamecki raced to a second-place finish in the 100-yard free with 46.90.

On the women's side, Mardell Ramirez claimed two events and Alexia Rojas won another.

Ramirez won the 200- and 500-yard free with times of 1:54.52 and 5:12.43, respectively. Rojas won the 200-yard fly with a quick time 2:14.28.

CLU's Stephanie Shelley placed third in the 100-yard breast with 1:17.42. Teammate Kimberley Mehl was third in the one-meter dive with a score of 172.10 points.

For relays, Ramirez, Emily Sharpe, Rojas and Katja Lindfors took home third in the 400-yard free with a time of 3:45.98.

Up next, the Kingsmen and Regals travel to La Verne, Calif., to take on La Verne and Redlands Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
