THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Another Saturday of competition saw a trio of Cal Lutheran teams head out on the road with the Regals bringing home a pair of victories.
Kingsmen Soccer (PP 2, CLU 1)
Cal Lutheran (5-3, 4-2 SCIAC) was doubled up by Pomona-Pitzer, 2-1, this morning. The Kingsmen looked to Diego Ortega for the only score of the day on an assist from Stevie Ray Trujillo. The Kingsmen, trailing 1-0, equalized the score in the 27th minute, but an early second half goal from PP was unanswered as the Violet and Gold fell at the final buzzer. CLU outshot PP 11-7 and earned three move corner kicks (6) than the Sagehens. Ortega fired off a team-leading three shots while both Danny Pacheco and Max Sharpe finished with a pair and both of Pacheco's were on target. Goalkeeper Eduardo Garcia recorded four saves in 90 minutes of action.
Regals Volleyball (CLU 3, WC 2)
Cal Lutheran (6-8, 2-3 SCIAC) took the first set 25-21 before falling into a 2-1 match-deficit after 25-14 and 25-21 losses. After the fourth frame, CLU knotted things up with a 25-23 victory prior to putting the match in the books with a 15-10 fifth-set win. Molly Holloway continued her dominance, recording a team-high 16 kills on a night in which she hit .500. Amanda Roberts notched a 12-kill, 20-dig double-double and was the only other player in double figures for kills. Reach double-digit digs were Emily Cisneros-Luebke (who led the team with 23), Carly Rose Howard (11) and Mikayla Dobson (10). Steph Rolfson did the setting, handing out 46 assists. At the service line, Dobson put down a trio of aces as the Regals combined for eight as a unit.
Regals Soccer (CLU 2, OXY 0)
Cal Lutheran (5-1-1, 3-0-1 SCIAC) remained undefeated in SCIAC play with a 2-0 victory over Occidental tonight. In the 10th minute, Alexandra Albaeck scored her first goal of the season, which turned out to be the game-winner. After the intermission, Maddy Griess added a second goal in the 58th minute to add to the cushion for the Regals. The defensive unit of Olivia Leyva, Riley Martin, Trinity Martinez and Katie Weaver helped to keep the Tigers scoreless. Gabby Flores started in front of the goal for the first time since Sept. 8 and worked all 90 minutes, not allowing a goal for her first career shutout while recording two saves. Overall, CLU fired off eight shots with six on target including four from Albaeck. The Regals limited Oxy to five total shots, of which two were on goal.
At home today, men's water polo took two, defeating La Verne 16-12 and Ventura College 19-9 inside the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Men's and women's soccer are both back at William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 27 for a double dip against UC Santa Cruz and La Verne, respectively, at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and women's volleyball is back on the court on Friday, Sept. 29 at Redlands.
