THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Whittier, on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. The Kingsmen cruised by the Poets 159.5-54.5 and the Regals won 148-80.
The Kingsmen and Regals claimed 19 events. The men won 10 and the women won nine.
For the Regals, Grace Sanchez led the squad with two individual victories and was one part of one relay victory. She claimed the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles with 24.93 seconds and 55.45, respectively. She was on the winning 400-yard free relay with Mardell Ramirez, Alexia Rojas and Emily Sharpe. They won with a time of 3:49.59.
Ramirez and Rojas both added an individual win. Ramirez swam to a first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with 4:45.92. Rojas claimed the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.34.
Melody Pope was the second Regal to win two events. She won the 500- and 1,000-yard frees with times of 5:23.38 and 11:07.88, respectively.
For the diving portion, CLU won both the one- and three-meter dives. Carlie Burow won the one-meter dive with a score of 162.80 points. Kelsey Daehlin claimed the three-meter dive with 186.05 points.
On the men's side, Andreas Nybo claimed three individual events. He won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 4:18.33. He continued winning 200-yard swims and finished first in the butterfly with 1:58.13 and the breaststroke with 2:12.24.
Six more Kingsmen won an individual event. Stephen Blaauw won the 1,000-yard free with 10:01.51, Jacob Frigard touched in with a winning time of 21.71 in the 50-yard free, Jonah Hobbs claimed the 500-yard free with 4:53.20, Thelen Mckinna-Worrell finished first in the 100-yard free with 47.46, Davy Thomas took home first in the 200-yard breast with 2:02.05 and Zach Zamecki won the 200-yard free with 1:45.60.
The men also won the 400-yard free relay as Frigard, Mckinna-Worrell and Zamecki combined with Liam McCallum with a blazing time of 3:14.59.
The swimming and diving teams continue their 2017-18 campaign on the road and travel to Claremont, Calif., for the Pomona-Pitzer Challenge Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m.
