WBB defeats Pacific; Kahovec competes at NCAA Championships; S&D takes on Oxy

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It was another busy weekend for Cal Lutheran athletics as women's basketball, men's cross country and swimming and diving competed at away venues. Women's basketball took on Pacific (Ore.) at UC Santa Cruz, cross country's Timmy Kahovec ran in the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships and swimming and diving took on Occidental.

Regals Basketball (CLU 52, PU 50)

Cal Lutheran's Grace Derksen hit a game-tying three-pointer with nine seconds left and the team made clutch free-throws down the stretch as the Regals (2-0) defeated Pacific University Saturday night in Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Derksen led the team with 10 points, followed closely by Kiana Gray and Kayla Watterson as they added nine points each. Gray went 3-for-3 from the three-point line. Watterson brought down a game-high 21 rebounds, 11 offensive and 10 defensive. Rylie Wada recorded three steals and Gray added two blocks.  

Regals led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter thanks to Gray's 3-pointer and Watterson's offensive rebound and layup. Going into the third quarter, the Regals who led by three points came out firing and turned it into an eight-point lead. The Boxers answered back and ended the third quarter on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 41 all. After Pacific hit one of two free throws, the Boxers held a lead until the game-ending run by Cal Lutheran.

The Boxers (0-2) had a 50-45 lead with a little over 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. CLU answered the call again. For the seventh time, the Regals tied up the game as Derksen made a 3-ppointer with only nine seconds left, tying the game at 50. Kailee Yan and Watterson each went one for two from the free-throw line after a pair of last second chances by Pacific and won the game 52-50.

On the road again, the Regals will take on Master's this coming Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m.

Men's Cross Country (Kahovec placed – 109th) Results

Saturday morning, Cal Lutheran's Timmy Kahovec represented the Kingsmen at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships at Principia College in Elsah, Ill.

Kahovec, who qualified as an individual coming in 16th-place at the NCAA Division III West Region Championships, finished 9th out of all the West Region Runners and 8th out of SCIAC runners.

He raced his way to 109th place out of 279 individuals at the Division III Cross Country National Championship with a time of 25 minutes and 33.02 seconds.

Swimming and Diving - Results

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Occidental College Saturday afternoon in Occidental, Calif. The Regals claimed seven event titles and the men won five.

Mardell Ramirez and Grace Sanchez led the Regals with two wins apiece. Ramirez won the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:54.30 and 2:07.76, respectively. Sanchez touched in at 24.27 in the 50-yard free for her first event. She turned around and set a new career best in the 100-yard free with a time of 53.03.   

Two more Regals claimed individual events as Melody Pope won the 500-yard free with 5:29.51. Alexia Rojas claimed the 100-yard butterfly with 1:00.19. CLU also won the 400-yard free relay with 3:42.14 as Sanchez, Rojas, Brianna Baldwin and Ramirez combined for the win.

Andreas Nybo led the men's squad with two wins as he touched in first for the 200-yard breaststroke with 2:08.09 and the 200-yard fly with 1:53.23.

Zach Zamecki, Jonah Hobbs and Benjamin Brewer each added an individual event. Zamecki won the 100-yard free with 47.58, Hobbs claimed the 500-yard free with 4:49.37 and Brewer won the 400-yard individual medley with 4:17.92.

The season continues for Regals basketball Wednesday at Master's University at 2 p.m. Swimming and Diving is back in action Dec. 1-2 at UC Santa Cruz. The cross country season concluded with the NCAA Championships.
