Road Recap: MS, WVB Continue Competition; MWP, MXC, WXC Open Seasons

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – One day after men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball seasons opened for Cal Lutheran, the men's and women's cross country and men's water polo programs got underway for the first time this fall.

Kingsmen Cross Country (Place – 10th) – Results
Toeing the line for the first time in 2017, the CLU squad produced a solid showing, paced by senior Timmy Kahovec who came in 13th-place and clocked in at twenty-six minutes and 10.3 seconds. Christian Rider was the second finisher for the Kingsmen and placed 82nd (27:33.6). Cal Lutheran's Nikita Khromets came in 134th (29:07.5), Zachary Sergey was 135th (29:10.3) and Michael Miller rounded out the top-five in 154th-place (29:55.8).

Suiting up in Violet and Gold for the first time today was Khromets and Aaron Rider.  

Regals Cross Country (Place – 15th) – Results
The women's cross country team also competed for the first time of the fall this morning, with Rachel Ereso pacing the Regals as she finished in 71st-place with a time of 21:09.6. The second through fourth finishers for CLU today were Olivia Becker (84th, 21:30.6), Kylie Rodriguez (104th, 22:28.0) and Mariah Mercado (111th, 22:51.1). Rounding out the top-five for Cal Lutheran was Katie Young (120th, 23:32.8).

Racing for the first time on the collegiate scene for Cal Lutheran today was Stephanie Allen, Becker, Rachel Coleman, Taylor Nelson and Mercado.

Kingsmen Water Polo (IONA 9, CLU 7; NAVY 12, CLU 8)

The 2017 men's water polo season opened with a pair of tough games against Division I opponents and the Kingsmen held their own, using the experience as a learning one. CLU came up short in both games and lost to Iona 9-7 and Navy 12-8.

Cal Lutheran's Chris Gardhouse tallied three goals in each game to lead the squad. Goalie's for the Kingsmen were Jake Venckus and Nick Loomis.  Venckus recorded 16 saves against Iona and Loomis blocked 14 shots aginst Navy. 

Making his CLU debut today in the pool and scoring his first collegiate goal was Stephen Blaauw.  

Kingsmen Soccer (EU 1, CLU 0)
The second game of the season pitted CLU against Eastern (Pa.) with the Kingsmen falling to the Eagles 1-0. The weather was a bit of a problem as it rained for most of the match. Eastern's Cade Hormon scored the only goal of the match. Eastern had more shots (8-7), but CLU had more saves (3-1) and more corner kicks (9-4)

Seeing CLU action for the first time today was Gubidxa Gutierrez-Seymour.

Regals Volleyball (CC 3, CLU 2; TU 3, CLU 2)
The No. 6 Regals finished the Trinity National Tournament with No. 1 Calvin College and No. 16 Trinity University. Both matches went the distance as CLU lost to Calvin and Trinity by scores of 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10) and 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12), respectively.

On the day, Hope Stewart and Amanda Roberts both tallied 23 kills to lead Cal Lutheran. Both recorded a double-double in the match against Trinity. Stewart recorded 10 kills and 21 digs and Roberts had 11 kills and 15 digs. Jamie Smith kept the offense going had a combined 63 assists between the two matches. For the weekend, CLU was 2-2. Roberts and Molly Holloway were named to the Trinity Invitational All-Tournament Team.  

While both men's soccer and women's volleyball have wrapped up their respective trips, men's water polo will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 3, at 5:00 a.m. (PST) against Johns Hopkins (Md.) with a second game at 9:00 a.m. (PST) against Salem International (W.V.).
