Road Recap: MWP Knocks off La Verne; WS defeats Chapman

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen water polo team and the Regals soccer team were both on the road Wednesday and both came away victorious.

Kingsmen Water Polo (CLU 13, ULV 9)

The Kingsmen traveled to La Verne, Calif., as they took on the Leopards in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SCIAC) matchup. Chris Gardhouse scored five goals as Cal Lutheran improved to 11-11 overall and 5-5 in the SCIAC.

In the first minute, La Verna scored to take the lead. The Leopards added another goal a minute later. The Kingsmen fired back as Gardhouse and Mats Albins scored to tie the game at 2-2. Geroge French added to the scoring as the Kingsmen took the lead. Gardhouse added three more goals before the end of the first and the Kingsmen led 6-3.

Cal Lutheran scored three goals apiece in the second and third quarters and had a 12-8 lead heading into the fourth. French, Andre Laserna, Ramon Olivier V, Davy Thomas, Hans Cole and Gardhouse all scored throughout the two quarters. Thomas added one more goal in the fourth as the Kingsmen won 13-9.

Cal Lutheran moved the ball around a lot to allow seven different players to score. Helping the goal scores was Zach Zamecki with two assists. Albins, Matt Fong, French, Wyatt Lowe and Thomas Randles all added one assist.

Defensively, Gardhouse had three steals while Taggart Diehl, Fong, French and Thomas each added two. Nick Loomis was in goal and recorded six saves and had one steal.

Regals Soccer (CLU 2, PP 1)

The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team was coming off winning the SCIAC regular season title and continued its winning ways as they defeated the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 2-1 at the PP soccer field in Claremont, Calif. CLU has now won four straight games and is 14-2-2 on the year and 10-1-2 in the SCIAC. 

The Regals were strong from the beginning whistle as Kali Youngdahl scored 36 seconds into the game to set the tone. CLU had three more chances in the first half, but couldn't convert. Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Britain Chaputa made two saves in the first and had a shutout.

Pomona-Pitzer's Abby Onderwyzer scored the equalizer in the 61st minute. Each team had their chances after that, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Youngdahl scored the game winner in the 80th minute with an assist from Trinity Martinez. It was Youngdahl's 11th goal of the year. The Regals defense didn't allow a shot in the second half as Cal Lutheran won 2-1.

The Regals soccer team ends the regular season at home as they host Whitter Saturday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night inside Rolland Stadium. The Kingsmen water polo teams continues the season on the road and takes on Redlands Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
