THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It was a busy day on the road for the Kingsmen and Regals as six teams competed at opposing venues Saturday in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
Big news from the day was Kingsmen water polo winning its first road game at Redlands in school history, cross country's Timothy Kahovec earning First Team All-SCIAC honors, Kingsmen soccer remaining the No. 2 seed for the SCIAC tournament after a Chapman loss and Regals volleyball moving up to the No. 3 spot for the SCIAC tournament via tiebreakers against Chapman and Whittier.
Kingsmen Water Polo (CLU 12, UR 7)
The men's water polo team won its first-ever road win against Redlands as the Kingsmen scored six points in the first quarter and never looked back as they defeated the Bulldogs 12-7. The Kingsmen improved to 12-11 overall and 6-5 in SCIAC play.
Chris Gardhouse got the scoring going for the Kingsmen and Mats Albins scored next to make it 2-0. Gardhouse added two more goals in the frame as the Violet and Gold had a 4-0 lead. Matt Fong and Albins each scored in the final two minutes to push the lead to 6-0 after one. Redlands bounced back in the second quarter and outscored the Kingsmen 5-1 and cut the lead to 7-5 at the half.
Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter as the game remained close. In the fourth quarter, Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Nick Loomis shutout the Bulldogs as George French scored twice and Fong added one more to seal the victory at 12-7.
Altogether, Loomis made 15 saves during the win for a save percentage of .682. Gardhouse led the Kingsmen with four goals, French had three and Albins and Fong added two more. Justin English and Davy Thomas led the team defensively with two steals each.
Kingsmen Cross Country (Place – 7th) – Results
The Cal Lutheran men's cross country team came in seventh out of nine teams at the 2017 SCIAC Championships at Prado Park in Chino Hills, Calif.
Kahovec earned First Team All-SCIAC honors as he raced to a ninth-place finish with a time of 26:23.83. It was the fifth fastest time in at the Prado Park course in CLU history.
Christian Rider was the second Kingsmen to cross the finish line as he placed 51st with a time of 28:06.69. Nikita Khromets placed 56th with a time of 28:17. 34. Rounding out the top-five for the Kingsmen was Zach Sergey who placed 79th (28:59.78) and Connor Neufeld-Griffin who came in 86th (29:06.82.
Regals Cross Country (Place – 7th) – Results
The women's cross country team placed seventh out of nine teams at the SCIAC Cross Country Championships at Prado Park in Chino Hills, Calif.
Rachel Ereso paced the Regals and came in 23rd-place with a time of 24 minutes and 55.72 seconds. Erin MacNeil came in 52nd and Kylie Rodriguez was 68th with times of 26:14.63 and 26:49.67, respectively. Also, scoring points for the Violet and Gold was Katie Young in 73rd place with a time of 26:59.63 and Mariah Mercado in 84th with 27:29.29.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the event and the Athena's Bryn McKillop was the first to finish with a time of 22:36.55.
Kingsmen Football (CU 46, CLU 38)
It was a battle all the way to the end for the Cal Lutheran football team which came up just short against Chapman, 46-38, in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 SCIAC battle in Orange, Calif., at Chapman Stadium Saturday night. With the loss, Kingsmen is now 5-2 and 3-2 in the SCIAC.
On the second play of the game, Obasi Dees intercepted and took it back to Chapman's seven-yard line. That led to a Chris Beeson two-yard rushing touchdown and the Kingsmen had an early 7-0 lead. Chapman answered midway through the quarter as Ricky Bautista completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nico Ragas. Klayton Wood blocked the point after attempt. Chapman took a 13-7 lead with 1:20 left in the first quarter as Joe Mudie ran 70 yards for a score.
CLU cut the lead to three, 13-10, as Dominick Grimm added a 30-yard field goal with 10:48 left in the second quarter. On Chapmans very next drive, Bautista found Ben Bruce for a 31-yard touchdown pass and increased its lead to 20-10. The Kingsmen answered right away as Adam Friedereichsen found Josh Mooney in the end zone for a 20-yard score. Chapman kept the scoring going as they added another touchdown to make it 26-17 with 48 seconds left in the half. CLU added a final touchdown before the half as Friederichsen completed a one-yard pass to Kayden Clements for the score. CU led 26-24 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bautista connected with Mudie for a 52-yard touchdown and Chapman had a 33-24 lead. They added another touchdown to make it 40-24. CLU countered with a Beeson 59-yard touchdown run and closed the gap to 40-31 at the end of the third.
With 11:12 left in the game, Chapman scored another touchdown for a 46-31 lead. With 9:40 left in the game, Friederichsen threw a 15-yard pass to Aaron Lacombe and the lead was down to eight, 46-38. The Kingsmen had two drives down the final stretch to try and tie the game, but ultimately fell short 46-38.
Friederichsen completed 26-of-44 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Lacombe caught nine of those passes for 176 yards and one score. Beeson rushed for 98 yards and two scores. Cal Lutheran's Morgan Salzwedel kicked five extra points in the game.
Defensively, Nick Gordon and Christian Rivers led the team with nine tackles. Dees and Klayton Wood recorded and interception. Acquarey Eddington tallied a sack.
Kingsmen Soccer (WC 2, CLU 1 (2OT))
In the final game of the regular season, the Kingsmen soccer team traveled to Whittier and fell to the Poets in double-overtime by a score of 2-1. The Kingsmen (11-4-2, 9-3-2 SCIAC) remained in the No. 2 spot in the SCIAC as Chapman lost earlier today.
In the first half, Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Eduardo Garcia was busy in front of the net and recorded five saves to keep the Poets scoreless. The Kingsmen fired six shots, but only one on goal. The first half was all defense as the game was scoreless at halftime.
The Kingsmen had a couple chances in the second half as Diego Ortega and Jake Rast fired shots on goal, but Whittier's goalie was there for the saves. In the 85th minute, Whittier's Connor Tait-Mole scored the first goal of the game. Not even three minutes later, Daniel Aguilar connected on a shot to tie the game.
The game went to overtime and both teams were scoreless in the first period. In the second overtime period, Tait-Mole scored his second goal of the game and Whittier won 2-1.
Regals Volleyball (CMS 3, CLU 0)
The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for its season finale with playoff implications on the line. The Regals fell to the Athenas 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-11) and moved to 15-11 and 10-6 in SCIAC play.
The Athenas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set. They pushed the lead to eight and were up 14-6. CMS didn't let up and won the first set 25-11. The Athenas came out on the fire in the second set and had an 8-3 lead. With CMS up 10-5, CLU scored four straight points to cut the lead to one. Molly Holloway recorded a kill during the run. The Regals continued to keep it close, but CMS still had a 19-16 lead. That was as close as the Regals would get as CMS won the set 25-19. Thhe Athenas won the third set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Holloway, Amanda Roberts and Hope Stewart each tallied five kills. Steph Rolfson contributed with 11 assists. Defensively, Emma Cisneros-Luebke led the team with 15 kills.
The Kingsmen water polo team continues its season Wednesday as they host Chapman, the Kingsmen football team has a bye week before they welcome Redlands Saturday Oct., 11 for Senior Day at 1 p.m., the Kingsmen soccer team will host Chapman in the first round of the SCIAC tournament Wednesday, the Regals volleyball team will be in action Thursday at La Verne in a SCIAC postseason match and both cross country teams have the NCAA Division III West Regional Championships Saturday Oct., 11.
