Road Recap: WG Faces UR in Dual Round; MT, WT Compete at ITA/USTA West Regionals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – October opened with a trio of Cal Lutheran athletic teams competing on the road. While the women's golf team played a round against Redlands in non-conference action, both the men's and women's tennis programs wrapped up the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/United States Tennis Association (USTA) West Regionals hosted at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps from Friday to Sunday.

Women's Golf (334 (+50))
Cal Lutheran competed in a dual match against Redlands on Sunday at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, Calif., a course that all players will navigate again in the spring during Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. CLU sent six Regals to play the 5813-yard, par-71 course. Marissa McCardell paced the group with a round of 79 (+8) followed by Erica Mitchell (83), Chloe Barnes (86), Delaney Buck (86) and Hannah Pasco (89).

Kingsmen Tennis
Cal Lutheran sent seven Kingsmen to compete in singles and or doubles at the ITA/USTA West Regionals over the weekend. Leading the way was junior transfer Yahn Gawrit who advanced to the final 16 from the draw of 64 by winning two rounds on Friday as he defeated Sam Palech from Pomona-Pizer 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2 in the first round and Derik Nguyen from Caltech 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. He fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Andy Park, the No. 3 seed, in the Round of 16. Ransom Braaten also had a victory in the consolation tournament, defeating last year's NCAA Division III National finalist and tournament No. 2 seeded Nicolai Parodi (CMS) by 6-2, 6-2 scores. In doubles action, the CLU No. 1 team of Lucas Tilly and Andrew Tufenkian won the second round consolation draw by defeating Avery David and Andrew Leahy of Redlands 8-6.

Women's Tennis
Cal Lutheran sent a squad of seven Regals to the ITA/USTA West Regionals over the weekend at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to play singles and doubles against 10 other West region colleges. Junior Sarah Seeman led the way for the Regals, advancing to the first round of the consolation tournament where she defeated earned four victories against players from UC Santa Cruz (6-0, 6-3), Whittier (6-4, 6-2), Pomona-Pitzer (6-3, 6-2) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-3, 6-2) before finally falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Chiara Schwab by 6-4, 6-2 scores. Christie Kurdys recorded a round one victory over Weera Wright from Occidental 6-1, 6-1 but had the tough challenge of facing top-seeded Nicole Tan (CMS), falling 6-1, 6-0. Senior Gianna Cupo started the weekend by defeating Claire Sone from UCSC 6-2, 6-0 before being forced to retire while trailing 6-3, 4-0. In doubles, Curdys and Cupo teamed up, but faced No. 1 Tan and Lindsey Brown (CMS), dropping an 8-3 decision. Finally, Seeman and Nicole Neuman worked together in doubles play, falling 8-2 to a Caltech team.

All three teams will be out of competition until the spring portion of their respective seasons continues after the New Year.
